MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University dealt the University of Santo Tomas’ first loss, joining La Salle as the only undefeated teams in the 2024 Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-season Championship on Saturday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.   

FEU turned to Jean Asis and Jazlyn Ellarina to turn back the erstwhile-unbeaten UST, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23, in Pool F.

Asis impressed with 12 points after being converted to opposite spiker from middle blocker, nailing eight kills and four blocks, as Ellarina also scored 12 built on nine attacks, two blocks, and an ace for a triumphant second-round debut.

“Sobrang saya po kasi sa mga past games namin, hirap talaga kaming talunin sila. Finally, natalo namin sila in three sets. So ang sarap sa feeling na nagawa namin ‘yung part namin na maglaro ng maayos at ma-defeat sila,” said Asis, who came off a two-week break.

UST dropped to 1-1 in their group after its five-game winning streak was snapped.

Angge Poyos and Jonna Perdido led the Tigresses with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

FEU and UST continue to play on Sunday with the former facing Ateneo at 4 p.m., while the Tigresses take on the University of the Philippines at 1 p.m. with the league donating a portion of the proceeds of ticket sales from October 26 to 30 to the victims of severe tropical storm Kristine.

Meanwhile, La Salle inched closer to securing a quarterfinals twice-to-beat advantage after shooting down University of the East, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16, in Pool E.

Buoyed by their big win over NU last week,  Shevana Laput sustained her fine play with a game-high 20 points built on 18 kills and two kill blocks.

“Very happy that we won. We’re glad we won two games. We’re just very happy with our game,” said the 2023 National Invitationals Most Valuable Player.

Angel Canino added 17 markers while Alleiah Malaluan and Amie Provido contributed 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Lady Spikers, who opened the second round-robin phase with a huge four-set victory over defending champion National University last week.

La Salle shoots for a second-round sweep and the quarters incentive on Wednesday against College of Saint Benilde.
